Research project wants your memories of snow in Cumbria

Post by SnowScenes » Mon Nov 04, 2013 3:16 pm

Hi all,

I am a researcher at the University of Nottingham working on a project called Snow Scenes, which is collecting people's memories of snow and severe winters in Cumbria as part of a larger project working in partnership with the University of Aberystwyth, the University of Wales, RMets and the Royal Geographical Society. The project aims to expand regional pictures of extreme winter weather, exploring the role of place and memory - and connect personal accounts, with archival records and meteorological data.

As well as your own memories of winter snow, we would love to hear of any stories of earlier severe winters that your parents, grandparents, or other relatives and friends may have passed down to you.

Can you date your winter memory?
Do you remember where you were when you were affected?
Did the winter weather affect your plans for that day, week, month, or winter?
Were conditions unexpected?
How does the community feature in your memory? Were there efforts to help one another cope?
Are your memories supported by any texts or artefacts? Do you have photographs, letters or diary entries from the time, or newspaper cuttings perhaps?

I'd love for forum users to either leave their memories on here, submit them via the website (http://blogs.nottingham.ac.uk/snowscene ... -a-memory/), or email me - alexander.hall@nottingham.ac.uk

Also do forum users, as those who have a more knowledgeable understanding of weather than the average Joe on the street, have any opinions on whether the occurrence, regularity, and severity of snowy winters has changed in recent decades?
